The Mid Cape

The Mid Cape is comprised of three towns, the largest being the town of Barnstable. It is the largest town on the Cape. As you may suspect, it is the commerce capital of Cape Cod. All roads lead either to or through Hyannis. Barnstable is host to much of what Cape Cod has to offer. From the Barnstable Airport to the Cape Cod Community College, it is the Hub of the Cape.

Barnstable is a collection of villages. The most notable being Hyannis, a multifaceted business center exemplified by the Cape Cod Mall. The others, unique on their own, are Hyannisport, famous for its Kennedy Compound; Centerville, Osterville, and Cotuit, three villages offering lovely homes and peaceful surroundings located on Nantucket Sound; Marstons Mills, in the middle of the Cape, recalls pastoral country scenes. Cummaquid, small but elegant, found on the Bay side of the Cape; West Barnstable, another bay side village graced by Sandy Neck Beach, undeniably one of the most interesting and beautiful areas on the Cape; Barnstable Village itself, on the bay side on Route 6A. Barnstable Village is the seat of Barnstable County, housing Superior Court, the Criminal Court House, Registry of Deeds, Probate Court, etc. It also houses one of the oldest theaters in America, The Barnstable Comedy Club which is fully accessible.

Yarmouth is the next town east of Barnstable. Truly an example of old versus new, one side of Yarmouth on Rte. 28 (the new) is often compared to the other, Rte. 6A (the old). Although Cape Cod itself is named for a fish, Yarmouth could have been named for one too. In fact many areas of the town were. Bass River is not only a village of the town, but being the largest river on the Cape, it houses beaches and a uniquely accessible fishing pier. Another part of the town labeled with bass is Bass Hole, a Bay side area offering the more quiet surroundings of Rte. 6A and is even cloaked in historical mystery as a supposed site of a Viking battle. Yarmouth's newest accessible feature is 350' of new boardwalk in a lovely conservation area on Meadowbrook Road.

Dennis, which has beaches both on Nantucket Sound and on Cape Cod Bay, is the next town. The north side (Bay side) of Dennis is most noted for having the Cape Playhouse where many a famous career started and offers a star-studded line up all summer. It also houses Scargo Tower which overlooks Scargo Lake and has great views of the Bay. The tower commemorates the legend of Indian Princess Scargo.

On the Rte. 28 side there is West Dennis Beach, a long sandy stretch, located on the Dennis side of the mouth of Bass River, is a favorite for the young. Also popular with adolescents is Seaview Playland. It houses arcade games, miniature & pitch and putt golf.
