Parking Regulations

All parking lots for customers or visitors (with the exception of valet parking), should have accessible spaces for vehicles which have proper identification. Parking lots for employees (built or altered as of 1/26/92) must also have accessible spaces. An older parking lot may accommodate an employee with disabilty if s/he requests it of the employer.

The size of accessible parking spaces should be at least 8 feet wide, with level, cross-hatched access aisles not less than 5 feet wide. One in eight (8) spaces for people with disabilities (minimum 1) should be a van accessible space, 8 feet wide with a cross-hatched access aisle of 8 feet wide allowing a van to operate a lift. As an alternative, all spaces may be universal spaces 11 feet wide with a 5 foot cross-hatched access aisle.

There should be a sign at each space showing the International accessibility symbol. Signs shall be located at the head of each space. It should be between 5 feet (bottom of sign) and 8 feet (top of sign). Van accessible spaces should have an additional sign below stating Van Accessible.

Spaces should be in a level location providing the shortest, safe, accessible route of travel to an accessible entrance, the accessible spaces should be provided at each location. Sidewalks at such spaces should have curb cuts at each access aisle, so a person would not need to enter a stream of traffic to get to a sidewalk.

Outpatient medical facilities should have 10% of the total spaces accessible.

Facilitiles specializing in treatment or services for people with mobility impairments should have 20% of the total spaces accessible.
